Glossary
Here is a glossary of some terms you may come across in this induction
- AVD - Azure Virtual Desktop. Formerly referred to as the Windows Virtual Desktop (WVD), this system lets you access some services which would otherwise only be available on campus.
- Banner - Banner is the University's corporate student information management system.
- Cluster - IT clusters are collections of computers available for staff and student use.
- Duo - The two-factor authentication system used at the University.
- eduroam - The University's on-campus wifi network.
- EMS - Environmental Management System.
- ESS - Employee Self Service, which allows staff to view their personal data, request holiday leave and reclaim expenses.
- GRAD - The system for recording postgraduate supervisions and related content.
- IDAM - Identity and Access Management (IDAM) services are part of the Cyber Security team and deliver digital identity services across the University.
- KRISTAL - KRISTAL is a 'one-stop-shop' for research proposal creation and grant management covering both pre- and post-award. For more information about managing grants see the Research and Innovation Service.
- LCMM - Lecture Capture and Media Management.
- Minerva - The University's Portal and Virtual Learning Environment.
- MIS - Management Information System (MIS) reports using the QlikView Tool allow academic investigators and research staff to review and analyse their portfolio of grants. Find out more about managing grants on the Research and Innovation Service (RIS) website.
- MSS - Manager Self Service, which allows managers to approve leave and expenses
- MyPrint - MyPrint is our secure print, copy and scan service.
- NDNA - National Desktop and Notebook Agreement.
- ODPL - Organisational Development and Professional Learning.
- OneDrive - OneDrive is a personal file store area available to all members of the University for the duration of your studies or employment.
- Phishing - Malicious emails trying to trick you into revealing your logon details or other personal information.
- SAP - SAP is the University's Human Resources (HR), Finance, Plant Maintenance, Sales and Purchasing System.
- SharePoint - Part of the Microsoft 365 suite. Cloud-based file storage with emphasis on enabling collaborative working, with options for creating web page-like front ends. The University's staff intranet is an example of this.
- Science Warehouse - An independent e-marketplace which enables end users to create requisitions from a huge e-catalogue provided by a number of contracted suppliers.
- SIS - Student Information Service. The go-to team around campus if you have a question or need support.
- SIPR - SAP Intranet Purchase Requisition is a web based requisition which is powered by SAP and can be used for most types of purchase.
- SOLAR - A tracking system that allows you to check the position of any agreement being negotiated through RIS Legal. For more information about managing grants see the Research and Innovation Service.
- Sophos Safeguard - The software used to encrypt University laptops.
- Syllabus Plus (S+) - The University's timetabling tool.
- Symplectic - The Publications system which is the University's central repository for recording publications and professional activities carried out by University members of staff and postgraduates.
- University-managed device - A device owned by the University, like a laptop, that we provide software and updates for via systems like the Company Portal.
- Viva Engage - Formerly known as Yammer – internal social media platform for organisations, and part of the Microsoft 365 suite.
- VPN - Virtual Private Network. The University's VPN let you access some services which would otherwise only be available on-campus.
- WEEE - Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment. The WEEE regulations cover how electronic equipment should be disposed of in the UK to reduce the amount of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) incinerated or sent to landfill sites.
- WRRO - White Rose Research Online (WRRO) houses research outputs from the Universities of Leeds, Sheffield and York.
