Username & Password
A username and password is required to use many of the IT facilities at the University of Leeds. The majority of services require a username and password, created when you first start work here.
Creating your username and password
New starters are usually asked to visit the website http://username.leeds.ac.uk in order to generate a username and password. If you have already done this you will have been given a username and initial password which will take a day or two to be processed. Make sure you keep this information safe.
If you have forgotten these details or haven't been asked to fill in the form, please contact your line manager or the IT User Representative for your department.
Changing your password
As soon as your username and password have been made active then you should change your password to something more secure that only you know. You can do this on a Windows computer on campus by logging on, then pressing CTRL + ALT + DEL together, choosing "Change a password" and following the instructions. Alternatively you can visit http://changemypassword.leeds.ac.uk and change your password there.
When you choose a password you should make it personally memorable but difficult for others to guess. There is a list of common mistakes people make on the Passwords section of www.leeds.ac.uk/informationsecurity. Although it is not compulsory, we recommend changing your password regularly to help keep your account secure.
When you change your password, remember to update it on all your devices otherwise you may lock out your account. Logging out of email and WiFi connection to eduroam on smartphones, laptops and tablets will help prevent this.
Picking a secure passwordUse one of the following methods to create a memorable but strong password:
- Use the first letter of each word in a memorable phrase, saying, nursery rhyme or song title. For example, the phrase might be: "this may be one way to remember" and the password could be: "tmb1w2r". (Please do not use this example).
- Substitute one or more letters with a numeric character (e.g. I = 1, A = 4, S = 5, L = 7 or O = 0)
- Take two words and splice them together with one or more numeric characters, or;
- Take an ordinary word or phrase and change, delete or add alpha-numeric characters so that it becomes nonsensical
If you have forgotten your password you will need to go to the IT Service Desk to get it reset. Please take your staff ID card or other form of photo ID with you.
Your "Known As" name
You are able to amend the way your first name is displayed on the University address book and email system. This might be useful if you have a preferred abbreviation of your name, or use a middle name instead. You cannot change your surname/family name using this method and this does not change your name on your university records.
To change your "known as" name, visit it.leeds.ac.uk/knownas and log in to change your details.
